Streaming in a downturn

Streaming in a downturn

Galen's musings
Streaming and YouTube are well positioned to thrive right now during COVID-19 lockdown where other entertainment suffers. At least as of writing this article many countries are closing bar, restaurants, sports venues, and concert halls, as well as asking that people stay indoors (shelter in place). Group gatherings over 10 people are prohibited. This leaves indoor, solo activities, especially Netflix, YouTube, and livestreaming well positioned. Let’s talk about why. Most of the things I mention here as “streaming” will also apply to YouTube/VOD content. Streaming has some traits of an inferior good Streaming has qualities that make it similar to the economic concept of an inferior good. I’m not saying that streaming is inferior to something. In fact, it’s a trait that could help all of us in the streaming…

Do I Follow My Own Advice?

Do I Follow My Own Advice?

Galen's musings
Do I follow my own advice? It’s a reasonable question to ask of anyone who gives advice. After all, you might question an overweight dietician, a broke financial planner, or a CPA who owes back taxes. They’re supposed to know better! Of course, as you may understand, knowing and doing are different things. So, here’s how I follow my own advice. Separate business and personal I separate my business and personal finances and I have since the start. This one is a biggie, and I’ve written about it here. Keeping my business and personal finances serves a couple of purposes. First, it makes it much easier for me to know how my business is doing! Using separate bank accounts, credit cards, and PayPal means that even if I weren’t working…

Financial planning lessons from Subnautica

Financial planning lessons from Subnautica

Galen's musings, Personal Finances, Running a Business
I love Subnautica. It’s amazing. I lose hours and hours to it without realizing that they’re passing by. Really the only downside is if my wife tries to get my attention, she invariably makes me jump out of my chair because the atmosphere can make me so anxious. Stupid Reapers. Anyways, the reason I say all of that is there are some important planning lessons you can take from Subnautica and apply to your above sea level life. Let’s dive into it. This will have some spoilers. Survival first then fancy stuff Your first task in Subnautica is to get your baseline survival and survival gear in order. You need to figure out how to get food, water, basic materials, and the tools that let you slowly advance. As pretty…

Mid year planning for your business

Mid year planning for your business

Galen's musings, Running a Business
Believe it or not, we’re in the second half of 2018! It’s a great time to evaluate how the year’s gone so far, compare to what you planned at the start of the year, and re-do your plan for the rest of the year. Mid year planning can be the turning point for your business. For the record, I didn’t do phenomenally well at my 2018 New Year’s resolutions. About the only thing I fully kept to was being better at sales. Ah well. Reflect on what’s happened How’s your 2018 gone so far? You should take some time to actually reflect on it. It’s important to make plans but it’s even more important to check in on them and adjust. No plan survives first contact with the enemy (or…

Earning like Ninja

Earning like Ninja

Galen's musings, Running a Business
I think it's cool that Ninja's been doing so incredibly well. He’s on a roll with the awesome Drake co-stream, a phenomenal interview on CNBC, and just generally being a good guy while shattering records. Heck, I'm willing to bet that CNBC dramatically underestimated Ninja's monthly income when they said he's making $500k a month. I'll go into that in a sec. I also want to cover why while it's possible to make that much, it's hard to do. We'll go into the numbers on a couple of different scenarios. The critical thing to recognize with each of them is that even the smallest case I'll discuss is still easily in the top 1% of streamers. Streaming isn't an easy job. You work regularly 8+ hours a day ON CAMERA…

SWOT analysis

SWOT analysis

Galen's musings
SWOT analysis While getting my MBA I learned many things that really don’t matter to me today. For instance, I rarely my CFA level investment management class. However, one of the things that I do use is the SWOT analysis. While it’s safe to say that it can get a bit buzz-wordy, at its core it’s a useful tool. What is a SWOT analysis? SWOT is an acronym. Is stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. The idea is to analyze those factors as they apply to you, your business, or even a specific opportunity. With strengths and weaknesses you focus on the internal and with opportunities and threats you focus on the internal. Strengths What are you good at? What advantages do you have? What’s unique and beneficial about…

The Four Things You Can Do With Money

The Four Things You Can Do With Money

Galen's musings, Personal Finances
The four things you can do with money This concept is blatantly borrowed from Financial Planning 3.0 by the late Richard Wagner. My plan is to take it and more specifically apply it to content creators with a focus on streamers. Let’s dig in to the four thing you can do with money and the magic formula you can use it figure out the right mix for you! Thing 1: Receive it Receiving money can be extremely sweet or the worst thing in the world. After all, it could be payment for an awesome commission, your first sub, or the sub that gets you to the level you calculated would let you go full time. However, it could also be lottery winnings (check out the stats, usually leads to bad…

Bet on Yourself for Accountability

Bet on Yourself for Accountability

Galen's musings, Personal Finances, Running a Business
I came across a really interesting personal accountability tactic while reading the book Nudge, a book with strong behavioral finance implications. If you’ve not read it before, I think it’s pretty interesting. Anyways, the basic idea is that you set up a meaningful bet that you will do something. That way, you are in control of the outcome. This could be an awesome tactic that helps you improve your stream’s consistency or your business’s operations. The book’s examples The author is a professor and part of his work involves mentoring PhD students during their thesis. His students have a strong financial incentive to finish their thesis as soon as possible because it leads to a promotion, increased pay, and increased benefits. However, one of the main ideas in the book is…

New Year’s Resolutions

New Year’s Resolutions

Galen's musings
I’m often a bit cynical. Because of that, I’ve often looked down upon New Year’s resolutions. “Why”, I scoffed, “would the passing of an arbitrary date make you change your life?” Well, I’m a changed man. I’ve come to realize that anything that can help motivate someone to improve can be a positive force. Also, what am I doing bothering with how someone else runs their life? Point being, this year I decided to make some resolutions for myself and to suggest some for streamers. Hopefully some of my ideas help you with coming up with your own goals or resolutions. My resolutions There are SO MANY things that I could and should improve. However, I firmly believe that you’re most likely to achieve your goals if you’re realistic. There…

How to ask effective panel questions

How to ask effective panel questions

Galen's musings
This one’s a little different than most of my posts but it’s been on my mind since TwitchCon. My awesome panel went a little longer than we intended (totally my fault) so I felt as though we didn’t have enough time for questions. Part of the problem was that we didn't get effective panel questions. Let’s jump right in to how to ask better questions! Have a Clear Goal What is it you hope to learn from your question? Hopefully you know that before getting up to the mic. If you’re not certain what it is you want to learn in the moment or have a very involved question it may not be appropriate to ask it at a panel. After all, the panelists are having to interpret what you're…
